The Best Muscle Building Supplement?
You’re working hard in the gym to build muscle fast, and you want every advantage you can get. You want (and need) the best muscle building supplement.
For sheer ability as a muscle building supplement, protein is king. Intense weight training breaks down muscle tissue. In order to grow and repair itself, the body needs protein. Protein is the single most important nutrient when trying to build muscle mass because it is responsible for muscle repair.
When a person is working out intensely on a regular basis, they will need to eat extra protein. Ideally, a person should consume approximately 1 to 1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight (at a minimum) in order to gain muscle. Hardcore bodybuilders often get up to 2 grams of protein per pound.
This would mean that a 200 pound man would need to consume between 200 and 300 grams of protein every day. Considering an average chicken breast contains only 30 – 40 grams of protein, it is easy to see that consuming enough protein can be difficult if the protein comes exclusively from whole food sources such as beef, chicken, turkey or fish.
This is where protein supplementation comes in and part of what makes it the best muscle building supplement.
Protein supplementation in this case usually comes in the form of protein shakes, which are a convenient way of getting extra protein without having to consume extra whole foods.
The most popular type of protein supplement by far is whey protein powder (it is often considered the best of the best muscle building supplement). Whey protein is preferred by bodybuilders and weight lifters because it is rapidly absorbed by the body and so is quick to aid in the muscle building process following a workout. Whey proteins contain the full spectrum of amino acids that are critical to developing and sustaining new muscle mass.
For muscle building, whey delivers more branch chain amino acids (BCAAs) than any other form of protein. BCAAs are vitally important to muscle building because they assist in the synthesis of other amino acids that are required for building muscle.
Continuing down the protein spectrum, the next best muscle building supplement is casein protein. Casein, like whey, is derived from milk. However, it is a slower digesting protein, meaning it is absorbed much slower by the body. Because of its properties, casein is usually taken at night so that it releases protein to the body throughout the night, further aiding in the recovery and muscle building process.
